May to be Proclaimed Better Hearing and Speech Month (Queen's Park) Oak Ridges MPP Frank Klees introduced the Better Hearing and Speech Month Act today which proposes to recognize the month of May each year as Better Hearing and Speech Month.
In his introductory statement to the legislature, Klees pointed out that hearing and speech disorders affect approximately 10 per cent of adults and 20 per cent of Children in Ontario . Early detection and treatment are vital for improving the quality of life for those who suffer from communication disorders. The Ontario Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists have been working hard to raise awareness of hearing and speech disorders across Ontario . Present in the legislature to witness the introduction of the Bill were Beth Ann Kenny, OSLA Executive Director, Ronnie Grant, Audiologist and Rhonda Jacobson, OSLA Project Manager.
" Ontario 's Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists fulfill vital roles in helping Ontarians communicate and overcome or manage communication disorders," said Beth Ann Kenny, Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists, Executive Director. "The Bill introduced today goes a long way toward raising awareness and drawing Ontarians' attention towards the importance of communicative health, the risks of harm associated with undiagnosed or untreated speech, language, and hearing disorders, and the availability of the essential services of our members."
"An estimated 3 million Canadians suffer from a communication disorder, to proclaim May as Better Hearing and Speech Month will help to raise awareness of these disorders and hopefully encourage Ontarians to see their doctors and get needed treatment," said Klees.
