KLEES CALLS ON PREMIER TO ASSIST

RICHMOND HILL RESIDENTS WITH LIFE SAVING TREATMENT

(Queen's Park)     Frank Klees, MPP for Oak Ridges, has forced a special debate in the Legislature tomorrow evening (Tuesday, February 22, 2005) on the lack of government funding for enzyme replacement therapy for sufferers of Fabry disease.

Klees claimed his privilege as a Member of the Legislature to have the debate scheduled when his direct question to the Premier during today's question period was deflected.

Klees asked the Premier to tell his constituents, Rick and Mara Sgroi and their daughter, why he refused to instruct the Minister of Health to do what needed to be done to ensure that they received the medical attention they needed to save their lives. (Hansard attached) The Premier deflected the question to the Minister of Health.

"He brushed the question off to the Minister of Health, who, once again, hid behind bureaucratic regulations instead of making a commitment to help those who need this treatment," said Klees.   "The people who suffer from this disease are asking legitimate questions that deserve answers and I cannot stand by while the Premier and his Minister of Health shirk their responsibilities."
