SERVICES FOR THE DEVELOPMENTALLY
DISABLED
Mr.
Frank Klees (Oak Ridges): I have a petition addressed to the Legislative
Assembly of Ontario that was delivered to me by Roxanna Spruyt-Rocks
of the Independent Living Residences for the Deafblind in Ontario.
It reads as follows:
"Whereas,
without appropriate support, people who have an intellectual disability
are often unable to participate effectively in community life and
are deprived of the benefits of society enjoyed by other citizens;
and
"Whereas
quality supports are dependent on the ability to attract and retain
qualified workers; and
"Whereas
the salaries of workers who provide community-based supports and
services are up to 25% less than salaries paid to those doing the
same work in government-operated services and other sectors;
"We,
the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to
address, as a priority, funding to community agencies in the developmental
services sector to address critical underfunding of staff salaries
and ensure that people who have an intellectual disability continue
to receive quality supports and services that they require in order
to live meaningful lives within their community."
I am
pleased to affix my signature to this petition.

Ontario Hansard October
18, 2005:
REGIONAL
CENTRES FOR THE DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED
Mr. Frank Klees (Oak Ridges): This petition
that I'm going to read into the record is signed by Christine and
Dieter Bressel of Markham, Ontario. It reads as follows:
"To
the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
"Whereas
Dalton McGuinty and his Liberal government were elected based on
their promise to rebuild public services in Ontario;
"Whereas
the Minister of Community and Social Services has announced plans
to close Huronia Regional Centre, home to people with developmental
disabilities, many of whom have multiple diagnoses and severe problems
that cannot be met in the community;
"Whereas
closing Huronia Regional Centre will have a devastating impact on
residents with developmental disabilities, their families, the developmental
services sector and the economies of the local communities; and
"Whereas
Ontario could use the professional staff and facilities of Huronia
Regional Centre to extend specialized services, support and professional
training to many more clients who live in the community, in partnership
with families and community agencies;
"We,
the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to
direct the government to keep Huronia Regional Centre, home to people
with developmental disabilities, open, and to transform them into
`centres of excellence' to provide specialized services and support
to Ontarians with developmental needs, no matter where they live."
I'm
pleased to affix my signature to this petition. |
